Candice Hoyes is an artist of “chilling range [Vogue], a vocalist telling globally inspired, genre-defying, life-giving song stories both intimate and soaring. Candice’s new release Blue Lagoon Woman, a 2022 BOMB Magazine Editor’s Choice, explores Afro-Caribbean life: the sensual, the spiritual, the supernatural. She was dubbed “an artist with the most eclectic and delicious voice ever” by JazzFM (UK) as she brings “Black history into the present” (NPR).
Of Jamaican parentage, Candice Hoyes gravitated towards music at an early age. Influenced by retro soul and jazz, operatic music and feminist icons found as a kid in her parents’ record collection, she composes, draws upon archives and writes spoken word to launch transcendent curations. As an operatic Soprano, she has played and recorded with Philip Glass, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Damien Sneed, Ricky Ian Gordon and the late Lorin Maazel. She has collaborated in jazz with Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Lalah Hathaway, Keyon Harrold and opening for Chaka Khan
Recent performances include Carnegie Hall, Detroit Symphony, WNYC, and Blue Note. Candice is a Harvard and Columbia graduate, NYC Women’s Fund Grant recipient, TED Alumna. Candice’s Blue Lagoon Woman EP is now featured in Carnegie Hall’s 2022 exhibition, “Afrofuturism.”
