Music, Art and Literature Collide in ‘Answer Songs’ with Rick Moody

Thursday March 28 2024 • 7:57am - 7:57am ET

Rick Moody reads from "Hotels of North America" while artist Michael Arthur responds in illustration

It’s songwriter and novelist Ben Arthur‘s contention that all art answers other art. So for his latest album, Call and Response, he composed a collection of what he calls “answer songs” — pieces that serve as responses to other artists’ work.

He joined us live on stage Nov. 10 for another installment of “Answer Songs.” Novelist Rick Moody read from his latest book, Hotels of North America, and Arthur and vocalist Xenia Rubinos played songs they wrote in response, with artist Michael Arthur creating on-the-spot drawings. Together, they explored the hazy intersection between art, literature and music. How does one artist’s ideas, characters and sounds inspire and inform new ideas, characters and sounds? Soundcheck’s John Schaefer hosted.
