How A Prairie Home Companion’s Fred Newman Makes His Sound Effects

Thursday October 31 2024 • 12:41am - 12:41am ET

Sound effects master Fred Newman in The Greene Space for "A Christmas Carol"

Ask Fred Newman what it is that he does and he says, “I honk for a living.”

Fans of A Prairie Home Companion may recognize him as the man behind the crunch of footsteps and squeak of doors that bring radio storytelling to life. And for the past few years, he’s provided the sound effects for our own radio play of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, featuring WNYC and WQXR hosts, written by award-winning playwright Arthur Yorinks and directed by WQXR’s Elliott Forrest.
