EMANCIPATION 150: Tony Award Winner Savion Glover on How He Got His Start in Tap

Sunday November 24 2024 • 3:24pm - 3:24pm ET

You probably don’t know it, but Tony Award-winning dancer and choreographer Savion Glover was supposed to be retiring from the Knicks this year.

When he sat down in The Greene Space recently with journalist Charisse Jones, Glover talked about how he abandoned those youthful dreams for the world of tap — eventually developing a talent and style that lead Gregory Hines to call him “possibly the best tap dancer that ever lived.”

Their conversation was part of our EMANCIPATION 150 series and touched not only on his career, but on tap dancing’s deep roots in African-American history. Watch the clip below and check out the entire show, “The Rhythm of Freedom,” here.
