Behind the Music: Meet the Bands Competing in the 2014 Ultimate Battle of the Boroughs

Battle of the Boroughs

Friday November 22 2024 • 2:32am - 2:32am ET

Catching up with Manhattan Battle contestants 5j Barrow in the West Village

Hundreds of up-and-coming acts from across all musical genres entered our fifth annual talent quest. Just over 60 were selected to battle in borough-by-borough competitions. Now, only five bands representing each of New York City’s boroughs are left standing in the 2014 Battle of the Boroughs.

But only one can be called the city’s best. From rock to soul to reggae, these musical acts will compete on Friday, June 27 for the 2014 crown, as well bragging rights and big prizes — including a showcase spot at the famed Apollo Theater Amateur Night.

Before the final showdown, get to know the contestants. Hear what it’s like to try to make it today in the competitive world of New York City’s music scene, what drives them to keep going and the very personal stories behind their music.
