On January 8, 2014, Polish pianist Rafał Blechacz was named the recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award, one of the classical music world’s most distinguished honors and one given only every four years.
The selection process is so secretive, Blechacz didn’t even know he was in consideration. The award brings the pianist $300,000 and a spotlight that can be career transforming. The 28-year-old is the seventh recipient of the Gilmore prize, whose past artists include Leif Ove Andsnes (1998), Piotr Anderszewski (2002), Ingrid Fliter (2006) and Kirill Gerstein (2010).
On the evening of the announcement, Blechacz gave an exclusive performance in The Greene Space, presented by WQXR and hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon and APM’s Fred Child.
