This John le Carré pastiche has a typically Stoppardian satirical twist. The failed suicide attempt of a British intelligence clerk reveals cracks in his department and his superiors. Everyone is so busy trying to play the game, they forgot what board they’re on, and sly stabs at government bureaucracy and upper crust suburban life make for elegantly boisterous fun.
