New Tech City: Tech, Music & the Brain

Hosted by Q2 Music's Helga Davis and New Tech City's Manoush Zomorodi

Tuesday February 4 2014 • 7:00pm - 8:30pm ET
In-person event

Overview

Join New Tech City’s Manoush Zomorodi and Q2 Music’s Helga Davis for an evening of music and mind with iconic performance artist, composer and musician Laurie Anderson, Mary Farbood, Assistant Professor in the Music Technology program at New York University, and Mari Kimura, Director of the Future Music Lab at the Atlantic Music Festival and an instructor at Juilliard.

A longtime pioneer in electronic music, Anderson has invented numerous instruments and devices which she’s used in her music and theater work, relentlessly exploring and experimenting the intersection of sound and language. Farbood’s research focuses primarily on understanding the real-time aspects of music listening, in particular how the brain perceives tonality and musical tension and how computer applications can facilitate musical creativity. After their conversation, Kimura will perform a piece called “Eigenspace” for violin and interactive audio originally commissioned by Harvestworks.

Come for creative conversation, a musical performance, and (of course) a glass of wine or two.
