Overview
Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this streaming event has been cancelled.
Leave 2021 in the rear view, hit the reset button, and move your body into the new year. Mirrors, a fresh collaboration originated by Justin Stanton – of GRAMMY-winning jazz-funk group Snarky Puppy – effortlessly melds funk, fado, and R&B. After months of lockdown in Portugal, Stanton and his girlfriend Gisela João yearned to reunite with fellow musicians and create. Borders began to reopen, and they were able to gather musical friends under the same roof in Lisbon with a shared vision – each artist must co-write a song with one another. Mirrors, the ensemble and eponymous LP, unites multi-instrumentalists and songwriters Stanton, João, who is a Portuguese fadista, acclaimed founder and creative director of Snarky Puppy, Michael League, Louis Cato of Stay Human (the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), and GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Becca Stevens.
Mirrors has blended a sound soothing as hot water and honey. The melodies are sultry, yet restorative, and the rhythms feel like subtle, affirmative nods, as if to say, “The world is coming back together… slowly… hopefully… we’ve got this.”
This event is produced with Sound Check and hosted by John Schaefer. Genre-neutral and open-eared, Soundcheck is the New Sounds podcast where artists perform and talk about their work, their process, and themselves.
