Radiolab hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich present a series of evening events in The Greene Space designed to tickle the mind and surprise the eyes. Each AWE-MAGEDDON will be a curiosity cabaret featuring one or two of the world’s most creative scientists, musicians, philosophers, actors and folks who can’t even really be pegged in a single word. We’ll be transported to a place where we are confused, amazed, confounded, inspired or flabbergasted.  Jad and Robert intend to poke at the ideas we encounter there, before raising a glass with the audience in sheer appreciation.

Buke and Gass are Brooklyn‐based two‐piece Arone Dyer on the “buke” (a self‐modified sixstring baritone ukulele) and Aron Sanchez on the “gass” (a guitar‐bass hybrid of his own creation). Both of them play double duty mobilizing a small army of foot percussion. These instruments are then filtered through various pedals, amplifiers and other homemade inventions to create a surprisingly complex sound. Arone’s supermelodic vocal lines weave through the beautiful yet sometimes unwieldy musical matter, balancing light and dark, calamity and control. Their musical multi‐tasking makes for live performances that are both visually unexpected and sonically explosive.

Hod Lipson’s research focuses on two “grand challenges” of engineering: (a) Can we design machines that can design other machines, and (b) Can we make machines that can make other machines. His work wonders “Can a computer ultimately augment or replace human invention?” In 2001, Hod Lipson joined the departments of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and the faculty of Computing & Information Science of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He is also a member of the Computer Science and Computational Biology graduate fields at Cornell.
